Abstract

Allelochemicals, plant-derived secondary metabolites, offer a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic herbicides. By disrupting key weed processes such as membrane permeability, photosynthesis, and respiration, they effectively suppress weed growth while minimizing environmental harm. Bioherbicides formulated from allelochemicals demonstrate selective control and enhance crop yields, making them a promising tool in sustainable agriculture. However, challenges such as variable bioactivity, limited commercial availability, and complex mechanisms hinder their widespread adoption. This study explores the potential of allelochemicals as bioherbicides, highlighting their applications, advantages, and future role in sustainable weed management.
